Welcome to Gravelland
Gravel riding is a total blast, and often a safer bet than riding on paved streets with cars around. There is a natural feel to a gravel road: more trees and wildlife, less city noise, more greenery. Portland, Oregon has miles and miles of gravel roads, probably very near where you live. It doesn't take special equipment or special skills to try it out. As long as you have at least medium-width tires on your bike, you can ride on a gravel road. On this website you will find lots of different kinds of rides that include gravel roads; from longer, more challenging rides to short hops located around city parks so you give grave-riding a try and then break out the picnic lunch! Also included is a full map of every gravel road in Portland that we know about, for those who want to explore on their own.
Like any bike riding, a helmet and other safety gear is always recommended. Like any street, you must be aware of other people and any vehicles around, you must follow all normal riding rules. Gravel roads almost always yield the right of way to any paved street that crosses them, but that only serves to slow the ride down to an easy pace so you can safely enjoy all the scenery and pleasure of riding on gravel.
So dive in and take a look around, and be sure to let us know what you think! We want this site to increase the pleasure of cycling in Portland for everyone, by expanding the options for enjoying a bit of gravel under your wheels.
